Toys for Muslim Children

Although Muslim children can play with many of the same toys as their non-Muslim counterparts, sometimes it’s nice to have toys that were made specifically for Muslims. With Islamic toys, we don’t have to worry about inappropriate clothing or language or questionable morals. Here are some links to games, toys, coloring pages, and stories made just for Muslim children: Razanne — Most young girls love dolls and many adore Barbie. Barbie can be fun and educational. However, with her tank tops, mini skirts, bikinis, and lifelong boyfriend, she doesn’t exactly embody Islamic values! Razanne is the Muslim’s answer to Barbie. … Continue reading

De-Cluttering your House, Body, and Soul

I am not a minimalist, although I have been accused of being one. My husband and I both don’t like a lot of “stuff”. It could be because we have moved 7 times in our 8 years of marriage. And, frankly, when you have a lot of stuff, you have to move all that stuff, and I hate moving! But, recently, we had an Enrichment meeting at church on how to get organized. It got me thinking about what I could organize better at home. I immediately thought, I have to get rid of some toys because Christmas is coming … Continue reading

Multicultural Gifts and Greetings

Just in time for holiday shopping, I’ve discovered Dollslikeme.com,a website which has many dolls, but much more, including hard-to-find ethnic Santas, puzzles, and accessories such as a tea set with images of an Asian ballerina on the “china” (also available with other ethnicity shown). The tea set was rather pricey, but the site also includes more modestly priced items, such as a 14-inch doll that comes with a diary for $30. You can buy gift tags with Santas of different ethnicities. The site carries a line of greeting cards featuring photos of Asian children—for example, as a Christmas elf. The … Continue reading

Whether you are home schooling or simply looking for an Islamic supplement to your existing education, you should consider using “The Islamic Year: Surahs, Stories, and Celebrations”, by Noorah Al-Gailani and Chris Smith. This book takes a very hands-on approach to an Islamic education. It takes readers on a year-long tour of Islamic history, told through happenings in Muhammad’s (PBUH) life. Each chapter is packed with fun and engaging activities: crafts, recipes, songs, projects, and more. Some activities include: making a bookmark decorated with an attribute of Allah, making a model of the Kabah, making a “stained glass” design of … Continue reading

Make Islam Fun!

Most Muslim parents are concerned with how to teach our kids to be good, “modern” citizens without losing their Islamic identity and values. The answer is balance. We, and our children, must take what is good from this world around us and leave what is bad. Likewise, we must absorb the good, peace-loving aspects of true Islam and leave the perverted, radical Islam so prevalent today. Okay, sounds easy enough, but how do we put it into practice? One of the most important things we can do is to play up Islam’s fun, lovely side. It’s too easy to let … Continue reading
