Marriage in the News: Temporary Marriages

There’s a brouhaha brewing overseas as many Western periodicals and newspapers detail that one of Iran’s hard-line ministers is encouraging temporary marriages. Why? Because he believes temporary marriage is one way to avoid the sin of extramarital sex. What is a Temporary Marriage? In Shiite Muslim tradition, a temporary marriage (sigheh) allows a man and a woman to be ‘married’ for any length of time based on a contract they sign. It can be as short as a few hours and as long as a few months or years. Money is exchanged, often in the form of a dowry. It’s … Continue reading

Marriage: It’s Not Called Dating for a Reason

As we’ve discussed previously, living together is not like being married — in fact – many couples who have cohabitated and then married agree that there is a different emotion, feeling and expectation associated with marriage that is not present in cohabitation. Similarly, while I have also talked about the need for married couples to enjoy couple time and date nights, marriage is not dating. When We Date Dating in the United States is a mixture of courtship, friendship and romance. Many individuals may date without ever expecting the relationship to go anywhere. A date happens because one individual or … Continue reading

LDS Family Services Website

The other day, I was searching for some enlightenment, for someone I know is going through a hard time right now. I decided to hop onto LDS Family Services website to see what I could find that might be helpful. I found a fountain of information that I thought I had to share with others. There are adoption services links, and addiction recovery links, but I was looking more for someone that I knew was struggling with emotional turmoil in their life. So, I went to counseling services. After clicking on that, I saw a link, Find help for your … Continue reading

Desperate Housewives Marrying to Avoid Loneliness

Lyn has partnered up for the second time. Her first marriage was extremely happy – except that her husband drank until he finally became an alcoholic. Miserable, Lyn put up with the situation for years hoping he would change, but as in many cases, he didn’t. The marriage failed. Desperate for a new man, Lyn went on the singles scene in her early 40s. Unfortunately she met up with Anthony, a seeming kind and affable man just five years older than her. But he had already been married three times before and had children to two of these women. He … Continue reading

Would You Allow Your Child to Wear a Purity Ring?

The Jonas Brothers wear them. So do some of the teens from “High School Musical.” Heck, there was even a point when Britney Spears sported one (what a joke). I’m referring to those mega-popular purity rings. The small silver rings are worn by young people to signify their commitment to abstinence. In other words the ring is supposed to help kids say, “I don’t,” before they say “I do.” The rings are part of an Evangelical Christian movement to encourage teens to make a “pledge of chastity.” According to my research, a father, who was outraged to discover that his … Continue reading

Michael Jackson: Converting to Islam?

There is talk that Michael Jackson is planning to convert to Islam. It was brother Jermaine that released this news to the media earlier this week. Jermaine, a Muslim since 1989, said that Michael had been reading Islamic books and is interested in the faith. Maybe Michael is looking for something to provide him with inner peace after two very tumultuous decades. Michael has actually been lying relatively low lately. Through the years though, he has been in the news for one reason or another. It used to be that Michael was in the news for good reasons. The self-professed … Continue reading

Marrying for Pleasure

According to a report by the National Marriage Project, marrying voluntarily out of love is one of the problems with marriage today. Marriage was once considered a mandatory economic and political institution according to the report titled 2006 State of Our Unions. The co directors of the National Marriage Project David Popenoe and Barbara Dafoe Whitehead wrote the report. Marrying for pleasure is not the only reason Americans are less likely to marriage. Unfortunately, the other reasons cited in the report are not something I necessarily agree with. Those reasons included: The birth control pill that allowed for sexual relations … Continue reading
